Flutist, Academic, and Coach

Flutist

In great demand as a recitalist and collaborative chamber musician, Altus Flutes Performing Artist Dr. Rik Noyce is known for his rich, expressive tone, exceptional musicality, and passion for chamber collaborations. An advocate of contemporary composition, he has commissioned and premiered numerous new works featuring flute, alto flute, and piccolo. He has held principal positions with numerous orchestras and wind ensembles, and performs throughout the United States, Canada, Central America, and Europe.

Born and raised in Boston MA, he began musical studies at the New England Conservatory Extension Division and later earned his Bachelor of Music from the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford. After spending time performing in the New England area, he moved to southern California to continue his studies and establish his career in that area. Rik holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Music, and a Master of Music with highest distinction from California State University, Northridge. He serves on both the Oral History and Archives Committees for the National Flute Association and on the Advisory Board for the Los Angeles Flute Guild.

Academic

Rik currently serves as Senior Lecturer Loyola Marymount University i, as well as Lecturer in Music and Humanities and Supervisor of Classical Winds and Brass at California State University, Dominguez Hills. He has previously served as a Guest Professor of Flute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of music, and as a faculty member at the California State University, Northridge Department of Music.

As a faculty member, Rik’s dedication to excellence in both applied and classroom teaching is unparalleled. He works to develop and support student’s critical thinking and analysis skills, their knowledge and comfort navigating all levels of undergraduate music theory, and their ability to speak about musical composers, compositions, and eras in a historically informed manner. In his courses, Rik holds high standards for academic writing and preparation for a career within the field. He is passionate in his mission to help students become the most self-sufficient and empowered versions of themselves.

His commitment to excellence does not end at the door to his studio or classrooms. Most recently, he earned a Certificate in Effective College Instruction through the Association of College and University Educators. Rik has been trained as an official Safe Space Ally for the students of his universities, and has worked to provide a well-rounded curriculum that will help students as they emerge into the field.

Coach

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Rik is a certified coach by the International Coach Federation and has been coaching people for nearly twenty years. Specializing in working with performing artists, he has coached several hundreds of people from all walks of life with time management, personal goals and productivity, creative blocks, stage fright, and performance anxiety. Thanks to modern technology, he is able to work with people around the world via video chat and phone. Rik has taken his passion for helping others and directed it toward helping found Whole Musician, a non-profit (501(c)3) collaboration of five uniquely experienced music educators who offer both in-person and online residencies and workshops. The Whole Musician team has developed a holistic curriculum addressing the mental, physical, and musical demands placed on the 21st century performer. The concept was born from lengthy and deep discussions about how the music field is constantly changing and how music education and artistry need to continue to evolve in order to craft fulfilling musical experiences in the twenty-first century. The team members are passionate about their art, their pedagogy, and the team concept. Through exploration of our music, body, and mind, the Whole Musician team empowers performers of all genres to realize their full artistic power and expression. Rik’s coaching background has helped him moderate many deep discussions between artists in attendance, helping each form a stronger relationship with themselves and those around them.
